Flyover State
Galerie Julian Sander is pleased to announce the German premier of the exhibition „Flyover State“ by American artist Jory Hull.
The series of photographs by Hull, born in New Hampshire in 1971, were taken from the window seat on various transcontinental flights between the east and west coast of the United States between 2006 and 2009 with a point-and-shoot-camera. „Flyover State“ is an American term used for states situated between New York City and Los Angeles. States, oftentimes overflown yet never recognized.
The view from a height of 10 kilometers enables the artist to perceive landscapes differently, as mere arrangements of structure and color. Abstract compositions emerge that unite photographic quality and picturesque characteristics: „They are sketches for impossible paintings“, says Hull, who studied painting at Savannah College of Art & Design.
Jory Hull´s project reminds us of the privilege modern commercial travel affords us. „The view from thirty-five thousand feet is certainly the most wide-angle lens most of us ever get to look through.“ Flying has become part of globalized everyday life and passengers paying attention to the world beneath are rare. Hull picks up on this, explaining that the term Flyover state not only describes a place, but also a state of mind. „It becomes a tiny game to frame up the passing details in the LCD screen, with endless compositional possibilities morphing in the rising and falling light. The distance and atmospheric haze adds a pleasing remoteness that quiets the image. I try to imagine everything below as completely foreign.“
In Hull’s photography’s, everyday scenes and objects reappear in unusual contexts and offer different perspectives. The viewer is challenged to focalize his attention on details that often remain unnoticed. Jory Hull sensitivity for interplays of perception is reflected in his other projects such as „My Mind is Racing“.
The works of „Flyover State“ are altogether unique prints. Each of the 70 motives will be available once only.
„In discussion with Jory it became clear that this project could not be seen as photographic. It shows the precision, which is embedded in the creative process. When looking at these works it becomes evident that Jory saw these views first, and he captured them most deliberately. The works also show that each of these moments is unique and as such unrepeatable.“ – Julian Sander
“Flyover State” was first exhibited in part at the exhibition „Aqua #6“ presented by Giorgio Armani during Paris Photo 2015. Jory Hull lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Galerie Julian Sander cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, January 14 at 7 pm. „Flyover State“ will be in the gallery until March 18.
