(German, 1908 – 1988)

Elfriede Stegemeyer, born in 1908, was a German painter, photographer and cinematic artist. She studied art in Berlin and later in Cologne, where she eventually joined the Cologne-based artistic circle Kölner Progressive in 1932. Among her companions were Heinrich Hoerle, Franz Wilhelm Seiwert and Raoul Hausmann. Stegemeyer explored the different means photography offered, by pushing the medium's boundaries. She produced photograms, photo montages, and still lifes, creative and dynamic compositions that inspired new perspectives.Much of her work has been destroyed in Berlin during World War II. Later, she started working again under the pseudonym elde steeg. Elfriede Stegemeyer died in 1988.
