Paris Photo 2016

For the 20th anniversary of Paris Photo In November 2016 Galerie Julian Sander will present “Troubled Times”, a group of photographs which revive the concept of an exhibition that was originally curated by Gerd Sander, father of the gallery owner. This term refers to the desperate relationship of social classes in New York City as seen through the eyes of Louise Faurer, Lisette Model, Weegee and Leon Levinstein. Julian Sander enriches this original concept by creating a narrative that starts in NYC in the early 20th century and continues into contemporary photographs taken in Iraq and Afghanistan and Argentina.

Louise Faurer is known for his vision of the streets of New York. We have a number of vintage prints including a particularly stunning image of Sonny Stitt on stage at Birdland which shows the dangerous balance the African American musician had to exercise during the trouble times in NYC.

Sean Hemmerle’s project “Them”, shown for the first time in Europe, are depictions of the citizens of 2 war torn countries in the middle east. Human faces which for many people in the western world represent “the enemy” although they are only people trying to make it through their lives.

Jory Hulls schizophrenic found art collages called “Underground Interpretations” show the every changing impact of advertising within the city scape of New York’s subway. A form of change that the citizens impact upon the forced visual narrative of their every day lives.

Alfredo Srur, a photographer who has lived inside the troubled worlds he photographs, shows us the daily life of a man living on the edges of existence and legality in the slums of Buenos Aires.

As a particular treat GJS will be presenting a photograph from Xu Yongs “Negative” series which presents a thought provoking look at the conversation between freedom and control. This photograph by Xu Yong has never been seen before, and as such will be shown for the very first time at PP16.

The idea of “Troubled Times” is rooted in the constant challenge we, as citizen of this planet, face in fulfilling justice for both ourselves and our fellow people. Photography is the medium which allows us to consume sights as if they were dreams we have had. As such the medium is destined like no other to impact our ability to both realize, accept and effect change from the status quo. “Troubled Times” takes its place in this process by challenging our understanding of our societal prejudices with works that reflect on a reality that is, and show a reality that
could be.
